ROBOT FIGHT CLUB, NEW INTERN, SUSHI DISCUSSIONS AND MORE

Hello! I am Fareeha, a new Needy Cat office occupant and a full time Marketing student. I have been brought on to do the social media marketing bit of the business so James and Sophie can fully focus on what they do best: writing and designing games. You’ll be seeing a lot of me over the next few months, so please bear with.

If you follow us on social media and our blogs, you must be aware that Sophie and James are *drumroll please* finally producing their own board game!

They have been talking about this for a long time but now it has a proper name. Formerly called Project Bash, Robot Fight Club is a retro-futuristic combat game inspired by a wide array of Robot games and media including Real Steel, RoboRally, and Robot Wars.

I asked Sophie where the idea came from and she told me that they came up with it over sushi. Amidst an intense discussion about their future, they decided they were going to start producing games instead of only designing them. The idea started with an idea for an arena fighting or wrestling game but then Sophie mentioned Robot Wars and it just built on from there. The launch of Robot Fight Club is their trial foray into the Kickstarter economy and they want to hopefully launch a bigger game after this, depending on how it goes.

The game has already been playtested at The Dice Cup, ProtoSpiel 2019, Nottingham Board and Wargame Club and also by kind friends over in the States.

Now, about the game! It’s a 2-player game that starts off with the players building 2 custom robots each by buying parts for your Robots through a Scrap Sale.(For first time players, we recommend going with the Quickstart versions and get right into playing the game). Each round is called a Bout and the game plays out over two or three of these. The premise of the game is that you have to move your Robots around the board, try to activate as many systems as you can, and inflict enough damage on the other robots to deactivate one of them before they can do the same to you. If you manage to do this, you score a Match Point. Two Match Points and you’re the champion!
